ECOS Director
|
Carol
A. Brewer, PhD Associate Professor, University of Montana
At
the University of Montana (UM), my lab group is actively
involved in basic research in plant biology, as well
as science education and I mentor graduate students and post doctoral
fellows in both areas. My research program in science education stems
from the belief that acquisition of knowledge alone will not be sufficient
to improve scientific literacy unless such knowledge is disseminated
and applied effectively. To improve science literacy, we need improved
methods for training future scientists, teachers and the lay
public. Moreover, understanding the nature of the
connections between teaching and learning requires further exploration
and consideration. ECOS represents the culmination of over a decade of
research and program development working with local schools to model
innovative approaches to ecological education.

ECOS Co-Directors:
Paul
Alaback, PhD Associate Professor, College of
Forestry and Conservation, University of Montana
My research centers on the ecological response
of forest landscapes to climate change and
disturbance in terms of structure, function and
biodiversity. I am also interested in comparing
parallel ecosystems in North and South America
to provide a broader context for understanding
ecological patterns and conservation strategies in both hemispheres.
While it is important to refine our knowledge about these complex
ecological phenomena, it is equally clear that
our greatest challenge lies in better engaging
broad audiences in conservation and education,
and promoting the use of scientific information
in public policy. I believe ECOS is key to
this broader goal in better training future faculty
members on developing more engaging and effective
teaching strategies and connections with K-12
learning communities. I am the editor of the
ECOS guide to the ecology of the northern Rockies
, which is being developed to provide an important
tool for enhancing interest and knowledge about the natural history of
our region, and as a resource for teachers and
the general public.
