Fish Guide

The Fish Guide is an online interactive database of the nearly 70  species that are known to occur in western Montana, with detailed descriptions of many common species.  To the extent possible our descriptions and photos describe the specifics of these species and their ecology in western Montana.  See links below to access the fish guide.

Fish in Western Montana

The last best place is particularly famous worldwide for fly fishing opportunities and the high quality of stream and lake habitats you can see here. Conservation of water quality, streams, and streamside vegetation and their associated fish habitat is central to maintaining functioning ecosystems in our area. Not only are fish a great reason to better appreciate the diversity of stream and lake habitats in our area, they also play key ecological roles in food webs that extend from forests to mountain tops. Aquatic habitats in general are the most directly impacted from human activities so there is a key need to provide better information on the health of these systems which you can learn by seeing what kinds of fish can be found there.
