Program
Philosophy:
We believe there is a natural connection between teaching
and research. Faculty engaged in creative research scholarship can bring the
excitement of discovery and up-to-date scientific advances to the courses
they teach. The Division of Biological
Sciences has a faculty of nationally and internationally recognized researchers.
Thus, we are developing a program that will bring the excitement of cutting-edge
research into more of our courses at the undergraduate level, and provide
more of our students with opportunities to be involved in research experiences.
This grant is 100% student focused, and allows us to do what we already do
well for some of our students even better for all of our students.
Funded
by: A grant of $1.4 million dollars from
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a nonprofit medical research organization
Goal and Objectives: Make creative research experiences
central to our training of undergraduates in DBS.
1) Implement 7 - 8 new courses which feature significant research experiences
and integration across disciplines.
2) Institute a program to offer research stipends and small grants to undergraduates
for independent research, and allow undergraduate researchers to travel to
scientific meetings.
3) Upgrade our laboratory teaching infrastructure with new research equipment
and computers for student use.
4) Offer faculty a variety of opportunities to develop additional innovative
teaching strategies.
5) Create on-line journals to showcase the results of student work.
6) Hold a Division-wide research symposium at the end of each academic year
to celebrate student and faculty research accomplishments.
